Medicinal Mushrooms

There are over 20,000 known species of mushrooms, and at least 50 have health-promoting properties.  While most people are familiar with the white button mushrooms, there are other mushroom choices at the grocery store, with potential therapeutic value.  
Asian countries use mushrooms as medicinal foods to stimulate the immune system in patients with HIV and cancer.  Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center website has interesting information on mushrooms and cancer under “about herbs.

The food you eat affects metabolism and is related to your mental performance.  Do a quick analysis of your breakfast.  At Holistic Nutrition Center, we list flavorings, color additives or excess sugar as ‘red flag’ items because they have the potential to alter metabolism, and can have an adverse, neuro-toxic effect in some people.  
Have you ever made the connection between what you eat for breakfast and brain symptoms like anxiety, lack of focus or headaches?  A few signs of food problems that I look for in adults are: feeling starved mid-morning, moodiness, or being unable to concentrate.

Happy New Year! If you made a resolution to lose weight, it's time to get started now.  Here are a few tips:

1.    Define your goal –  A goal gives you a direction and final destination that can be measured.  So know your target.  Pick a weight loss goal and date and identify the purpose for losing weight.  
2.    Make a plan.  Break your goal down into chunks.  If your goal is to lose 50 pounds by June 1st, then do the math - 50 pounds divided by six months is a little over eight pounds/month.

1.    Minerals: are a requirement from your diet.   They work with your DNA metabolism and need to be in a state of balance for proper function.   You take them in from food and eliminate them through body fluids such as sweat, urine or diarrhea.   Excess fluids leaving the body can flush minerals out.  So health-promoting fitness programs that leave you drenched, like hot yoga, for example, can produce unintentional mineral deficiencies or imbalances.

The ads on TV for adult diapers drive me crazy.  No, it’s not okay to just treat the problem by wearing something to collect your urine when you accidently wet your pants.  I suspect that most people have correctable underlying problems that can be explained with physiology.

I like to help people eat better and some folks just need a little motivation.  A blog may help.  Let me know.  

I think everyone should ditch the junk.  Your body needs real food - that's the simple truth.  So eat your veggies.  

The complicated truth is that people are really sick.  Over 50 million people are suffering from autoimmune diseases, 1 out of every 3 women can expect a diagnosis of cancer in her lifetime, most deaths are caused from heart disease.
